The Hype Surrounding Twitter

Twitter is a social media platform that people use in app or on the website. It can be used to share messages, daily thoughts, and news updates. There is a character count of 280, which keeps tweets short. However, the tweets, while still being short, are much larger in this update in comparison to old twitter, because the old twitter only had 140 characters. If someone isn’t as fond of hearing long rambles in their tweets, then they might not like this update.

Starting from the beginning, the app icon is simple, using the twitter logo makes it very recognizable. The instagram icon is definitely more colorful, but facebook is also a simple blue color like the twitter icon. Many of the social media sites such as twitter, facebook, tumblr, and even skype are blue, and as there may be a reason behind this, seeing a new color every once in a while is refreshing. However, the colors and likability of the apps icon isn’t important towards the function of the site.

Twitter appeals to both young and middle aged adults. The interface isn’t super difficult to use, but facebook holds the most popularity for older generations. The text is also quite large, but because the tweets are so close together, it can be intimidating to be scrolling through pages and pages of text. People still can post pictures, videos, and gifs on twitter, so those whole also enjoy that content won’t miss out.

Twitter seems much different than instagram, facebook, and snapchat because of how conformed everything is. There is only one type of post that is made available. Instagram has stories, regular posts, and an explore page to visit if you want to expand your content. Twitter has one post that you can add other content to, but because there is only one place to look to for content, it can be seen as simple, but also busy. It has similar features to instagram like polls. Instagram polls are extras that you can post on a story and let your followers vote. For example, twitter also has polls. These polls however, are included in regular tweets because there is only one page to post stuff onto. This design appeals to a certain audience, but more social media platforms are expanding their sites to organize different types of posts. This is why instagram has regular posts vs. stories, as well as snapchat, that has communication through streaks and the direct page, through snap groups, and through the story page (similar to instagram’s).

Twitter is noisy, and there is always a lot of tweets floating around. Lots of mainstream content that twitter carries is breaking news and updates, because of the word counted text that it is so commonly known for, sending quick blurbs about recent activity is easily shared. As opposed to a platform such as instagram, where people share events with each other and share staged pictures, twitter is more real-time.

If someone likes to only receive posts that they sign up for, then instagram might be a better fit. One of the reasons that twitter is so busy is because of recommended posts, posts that others are tagged in, and posts that others have liked, along with all of the accounts that are followed. Twitter uses an algorithm similar to all other social media sites besides snapchat, that mixes in popular content in a timeline, and also includes new relatable tweets that people you follow have liked. Facebook similarly, shares posts by other people that you aren’t friends with or don’t follow. It is a cross between instagram’s tagged posts and twitter’s recommended posts.

Apple Airpods’ Rise Among CHS Students

Columbia High School (CHS) students are finding new and sneaky ways of entertaining themself these last few weeks of school. As the end of school approaches, students become bored and disinterested in their classes. Apple Airpods provide CHS students with a new and minimalistic way to listen to music. Apple Airpods are innovative and sleek, yet they also becoming a distraction and may provide terrible utility. This brings up a debate on whether the Apple Airpods really are worth it and to who are they most worth it for? Maybe the bored student who would just like to pass time in PreCal? Or maybe the eclectic artist trying to brainstorm for some million dollar idea? Whoever it may best be suited for it is better to start this approach from a subjective view.

First and foremost the apple airpods are Apple’s way of trying to innovate one common problem with all headphones; their cords. Now bluetooth is not a relatively new invention, however, the common bluetooth headphones either have some string connecting the two small earpieces or come in large earmuffs to place over the whole head. From a comfortability standpoint the Airpods are top notch. Eva Feola, ‘18, who recently purchased a pair of the Airpods says, “I’ve never felt this comfortable and stylish listening to music, they are so easy to use and look good.” They hold no rubber either in small earbud shape or in the common earmuff fashion, allowing you to have a musical experience as if nothing was in your ears. However because they lack rubber, which provides friction, they tend to fall off and get lost easily.

Secondly, from a fashion standpoint, they remarkably seem to be hard to notice. One would think with their glossy white color that they would stick out like a sore thumb, but hey tend to blend right in. Thus the design in sleek and consumer-friendly all the while still being fashionable.

Thirdly, from a consumer standpoint, they are moderately expensive for a pair of earbuds that are wireless. They retail for $170-sum dollars at an Apple store and that is a surprisingly decent amount within the headphone market. Similar headphones by Bose retail for $250. While Beats charges $250 and up for their headphones. So the airpods price while to some remarkably high, based on the rest of the market relatively average.

All consumer products are subject to become objects of vanity. This is important because this is when brands transcend being just consumer products into becoming lifestyle products. Such brands that have done this are Supreme, Gucci, and most notably Apple. For instance, now if you have a Gucci product you are more likely to be seen by society as wealthy. The same thing can be said for the technological aspect. Having a Apple Watch or Apple Airpods exhibit your place in society as being technologically savvy even though you may not truly be just as if you have a Gucci product you may not truely be wealthy.
